Description:
Lycopene is an antioxidant compound which gives tomatoes andcertainother fruits and vegetables their color. Lycopene is one ofthemajor carotenoids in the diet of North AmericansandEuropeans.

Some researchers believe lycopene may be valuable in preventingandslowing the growth of cancers of the prostate, lung, andstomach.These scientists describe lycopene as a powerfulantioxidant, acompound that blocks the action of activated oxygenmolecules -known as free radicals - that can damage cells. Theantioxidantactivity of lycopene is at least twice as great as betacarotene,another carotenoid that is also thought to be aneffectivecancer-preventing nutrient. Lycopene is considered one ofthe moreeffective antioxidants because it is not converted tovitamin Aafter it is eaten.
